EKITI State governor Ayo Fayose has promised to fight back against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Federal Government over its recent freezing of his personal account at Zenith Bank.
Yesterday, the EFCC froze Governor Fayose’s personal account with the bank and those of several of his close associates as part of an ongoing investigation into his finances. Governor Fayose, who had earlier issued a cheque to make a withdrawal notices it was rejected by the bank and he then resorted to visit its branch located at Onigari , GRA in Ado Ekiti to find out what was going on.
Describing the action as criminal and illegal, Governor Fayose has promised to fight back against the EFCC. Citing Section 308 of the 1999 constitution, Governor Fayose said he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor , urging the federal government to fight corruption within the ambit of the law.
Governor Fayose added: “I got wind of the fact that the EFCC had placed a restriction order on my personal account and that of my associates. This action shows that this government has no respect for the constitution because I enjoy immunity under Section 308.”
However, the EFCC, has fired back at Governor Fayose of Ekiti State over his claim that he cannot be investigated because of the immunity he enjoys as a sitting governor. EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren, said that the immunity being enjoyed by any governor did not prevent the agency from investigating suspicious movements of money into his accounts.
He added: “Immunity does not prevent EFCC from investigating suspicious accounts of those enjoying immunity and Fayose cannot be an exception.”
