There are strong indications that the embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has started collecting signatures from Lawmakers, in order to commence impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari, Post-Nigeria gathered.
Speaking exclusively to Post-Nigeria on Thursday, July 14, in Lagos, during the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme, held to mark his 82nd birthday, with the theme, “Challenges or not, I love my country”, a top Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who is a Lawmaker at the Lagos State House of Assembly, name withheld, confirmed the impeachment plot.
“We are aware of their nocturnal meetings at night, 39 signatures have been collected already by Pro-Saraki group.“We have to stop them,” the Lawmaker told Post-Nigeria exclusively. He added: “As i am speaking, the lobby to get more signatures is still going on. Our informant is getting us updated”.
Recall, that the APC on Wednesday, July 13, reacted to the impeachment plot that was allegedly discussed during the Senators’ close door session.
The party had described the plot as a joke taken too far, and rather advised Senators, “to stop this huge joke and concentrate on their primary constitutional responsibilities of law making and discharging of their legislative mandates to their constituents at the National Assembly”.
Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, are currently facing charges of forgery, leveled against them by the Federal Government, and have been arraigned before an Abuja High court.
However, they have both pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
Also, Saraki is facing charges at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, for offences bordering on anticipatory declaration of assets, among others.
The Senate has constantly accused the executive of trying to remove its leadership, warning that it would not bow to the whims of some elements in the executive arm.
Speaking further to Post-Nigeria, the APC Chieftain authoritatively said; “Saraki has started collecting signatures for Buhari’s impeachment. The Senate President is desperate. The Senator is a great politician; he knows how to wriggle his way through”.
When our correspondent demanded for evidence to prove the allegation he said:
“Before the closed door session among the Senators, the Pro-Saraki Senators had already held a meeting at the instance of Dino Maleye, who has already collected not less than 39 signatures”.
However, despite the said allegation, the Lawmaker was unable to provide empirical evidence to really show that collection of impeachment signatures was really going on.
